The Mapuche defender of ancestral lands in Chile, Héctor Llaitul, suspended yesterday the hunger strike he had been carrying out for almost two months, when he met with Senator Fabiola Campillai, who promised, at the request of the indigenous leader’s family, to arrange for Llaitul’s transfer to a module for community members in the Temuco prison. The activist, 56 years old and in poor health due to the long fast, is serving a 23-year prison sentence for attacking an authority figure and inciting and advocating violence.
