Russian President Vladimir Putin (center, pictured) was greeted on the red carpet by his Mongolian counterpart Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh (left) in the capital Ulaanbaatar on a state visit yesterday that ignored the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) order to arrest the Kremlin leader, accused of war crimes in the invasion of Ukraine. The trip, which concluded last night, was the first by the Kremlin chief to an ICC member country since the order was issued in March 2023. Ukraine demanded that Mongolia hand Putin over to the Hague court, and the European Union expressed concern that the measure would not be carried out. The United States said that while it understands the geopolitical situation in the Asian country, it believes that it cannot serve as a platform for the Russian president.
