New York. The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) yesterday called for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in 12 months in a non-binding resolution, heavily criticized by Israel, which said it is an action cynicalwhile the bombing of Tel Aviv continued during this day in northern Gaza.
The resolution, which has been under discussion since Tuesday by the 193 UN member states, follows the ruling of the International Court of Justice, which in July, when examining the Israeli occupation since 1967 at the request of the General Assembly, determined that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegalwhich is why it has “the obligation (to) put an end to it (…) as soon as possible.”
Adopted by 124 votes in favour, 14 against (including Israel, the United States, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Argentina and Paraguay) and 43 abstentions, it demands the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian territories, the halting of new settlements, the return of confiscated land and property and the possibility of the return of displaced Palestinians.
It also calls on member states to take measures to stop imports from settlements and the supply of arms to Israel if there are grounds for doing so. reasonable to believe that they could be used in the Palestinian territories. It also proposes to adopt sanctions against those involved in the maintenance of Israel’s illegal presence in the occupied zone.
The Palestinian mission to the UN gave the vote an X historical. Israel lashed out at this shameful decisioneven though General Assembly resolutions are not binding.
Mexico celebrates the ruling
The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, yesterday welcomed the resolution of the UN General Assembly.
Mexico recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, while reiterating its support for the two-state formula, Palestine and Israel, as a basis for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.the Foreign Ministry stated on Platform X, where it called on all parties to comply with the resolution on the basis of constructive dialogue and good faith.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, visiting Cairo, called on Israel and Hamas to show political will to reach a ceasefire agreement.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders is preparing several resolutions that would suspend more than $20 billion in U.S. arms sales to Israel, a long-shot but the most substantial effort yet by Congress to combat the devastation in Gaza ahead of the first anniversary of the war.
The Israeli army yesterday bombed a school that houses displaced Palestinians in the Shujaia neighborhood in northern Gaza, amid the offensive against Hamas, launched on October 7 and which has left at least 41,300 dead and hundreds of thousands wounded.
