Sukhumi. The president of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, declared yesterday that he is willing to resign and call elections, as long as the coup plotters leave the Parliament that they have occupied since yesterday in protest against an agreement to grant projects to Russian companies.
They are putting enormous pressure on the deputies to force them to make an illegal decision: the dismissal of the presidentdeclared Bzhania. When the coup plotters have left the Legislative Branch complex, I will prepare to call elections and present my resignationhe said in a speech in Tamish, his hometown. Meanwhile, the opposition Coordination Council considers that the president has fled, while the presidential communication service affirms that he is fulfilling your agenda and it has not been disengaged of the position, reported by the local media Abkhazinform.
Yesterday, groups of protesters gathered again in front of the Parliament headquarters to continue the pressure. Friday’s clashes between protesters and police left 14 hospitalized, according to the Abkhazian health ministry.
Abkhazia is an independent republic de facto since 1992. However, Georgia and the majority of the international community consider it an autonomous republic belonging to that country, while Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria consider it an independent State.
