Madrid. The president of the United States, Joe Biden, extended the executive order decreed in 2018 against Nicaragua by which he declares the Central American country as a unusual threat to national security.
Biden referred in particular to the violent response from the government of Daniel Ortega to the protests that began in April 2018 over a controversial social security reform; Clashes between police and protesters left more than 300 dead.
To this Washington added the Ortega and (his wife Rosario) Murillo regime’s continued systematic dismantling and weakening of democratic institutions and the rule of law, its use of indiscriminate violence and repressive tactics against civilians, as well as its corruption, which leads to the destabilization of Nicaragua’s economy, which continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
Biden added that the order will remain in effect beyond the anniversary date. I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in the executive order regarding the situation in Nicaraguahe concluded.
