Bizarre kindness, westerns and a restored classic: this week's cinema releases

Bizarre kindness, westerns and a restored classic: this week’s cinema releases Adventure, comedy and a failed romance. We reveal all the new releases arriving in national cinemas this Thursday.

Emma Stone met Yorgos Lanthimos in 2015, when, terrified, she was preparing to talk about the production of “The Favourite”, in which she was a part. In 2019, the film ended up receiving 10 Oscar nominations and, in 2024, they both teamed up again for “Poor Creatures”. The case repeats itself with a new combination of talents in “Stories of Kindness” which hits national cinemas this Thursday, July 4th.

The film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is a fable that tells the story of a man with few options who seeks to regain control of his life. On the other hand, we have a police officer who is shocked to see his wife, who had disappeared at sea, return home with a completely different personality. Another of the characters is determined to find someone in particular, destined to become a “prodigious spiritual leader”.

It is a feature film that is “smart, a little sarcastic and a cabinet of curiosities not designed for beauty,” describes the “Vanity Fair“On the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes it has a rating of 95 percent.

The cast includes Joe Alwyn, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau and Hunter Schafer, as well as Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, who also starred in “Poor Creatures.” The 50-year-old Greek director promises more crazy stuff in this new film.

After this project, Emma Stone and the 50-year-old filmmaker will work together again, once again on “Save the Green Planet”. It will be a remake of the South Korean comedy of the same name, in which a young woman kidnaps a businessman who she believes is involved in an alien invasion.

Other new films coming to national cinemas this Thursday, July 4th, include Kevin Costner. 33 years ago, the film “Dances with Wolves” marked his debut as a director and captivated Western fans. His taste for the genre grew and now the actor returns with a new production — “Horizon: An American Saga” which portrays the conquest of the Wild West.

The feature film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year and will be the first of four episodes. The plot tells the story of the colonization of the West, before and after the Civil War, which took place between 1861 and 1865. Costner will play the main role, in a plot that involves whites and indigenous people, settlers and colonized, at a time when migration was high.

The film explores the fascination with the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the efforts, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears of many. “Spanning the four years of the Civil War, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take viewers on an emotional journey through a divided country, seen through the eyes of several characters, all trying to discover the true meaning of America,” the synopsis reads.

The cast includes names such as actress and model Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee and Isabelle Fuhrman. Also noteworthy is Hayes, Costner’s youngest son, who at 15 makes his film debut playing a young version of his father’s character.
