MEPs voted yesterday in favour of a second five-year term for Ursula von der Leyen (left) as president of the Commission, the executive arm of the 27 countries of the European Union. After the secret ballot, the 65-year-old German obtained 401 votes in favour, against 284 against, plus 15 abstentions and 7 spoiled votes, above the absolute majority she needed. In 2019, she became the first woman to hold the post. Meanwhile, in France, the Macronist candidate, Yael Braun-Pivet (right), was re-elected yesterday to be president of the National Assembly after outvoting her main rival, the candidate of the left-wing bloc New Popular Front, André Chassaigne. Braun-Pivet obtained 220 votes against her rival’s 207 in a third round that required a simple majority.
