Littleton — A wildfire in Colorado’s densely populated Front Range has burned dozens of homes and other structures, while another came within a quarter mile of evacuated homes near Denver on Thursday. Authorities had hoped hundreds of threatened homes would be saved, but firefighters trying to put out the blaze in the foothills of the eastern Rocky Mountains faced high temperatures, with some suffering from heat exhaustion. The struggle to contain the flames came after one person died in a wildfire west of Lyons, Colo. The victim’s remains were found inside one of five homes that burned. Nearly 100 major fires are burning in the Western United States, with the largest, in Northern California, destroying more than 400 homes and other structures, officials said. New blazes were reported in Idaho, southeastern Montana and northern Texas.
