Port-au-Prince, Haiti – More than 24 people have died in southwestern Haiti after a gas tanker truck exploded yesterday, Prime Minister Garry Conille said. Witnesses said the explosion occurred when the victims were trying to collect the fuel leaked by the tanker truck after it crashed. Some 19 people with serious burns were to be taken to hospitals in the capital thanks to a flight organized with the support of Doctors Without Borders, said the national head of Civil Protection, Emmanuel Pierre; however, only six had been evacuated by last night, he said. Other victims, with lacerations from the fire on 80 percent of their bodies, were unable to travel and are being treated at the Sainte Therese hospital in Miragoane, a port city.
