Brasilia. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva yesterday dismissed his Human Rights Minister, Silvio Almeida, after he was publicly accused of sexual harassment, including against the head of Racial Equality. The president considers the minister’s permanence in office unsustainable given the nature of the accusationssaid an official statement. The controversy erupted after the Me Too Brasil association received complaints from several women, including Minister Anielle Franco.
Almeida, a 48-year-old lawyer and university professor considered one of Brazil’s leading intellectuals, has denied the accusations and attributed them to a campaign to discredit the government’s only Afro-descendant official. I asked President Lula to remove meAlmeida said in a statement.
