At least 12 people have died and 31 are missing after a bridge collapsed in northwest China due to heavy rains, Xinhua news agency reported. The accident happened on Friday night in Zhashui County in Shangluo City, Shaanxi. At the time of this writing, civil protection teams had recovered five vehicles that had fallen into the river, although authorities estimate that 18 cars ended up downstream. More than 700 professional rescuers and a thousand residents are searching for the missing. The structure over the Jinquian River was 366 meters of asphalt and 40 meters fell.
