Beijing. The Chinese military yesterday condemned the transit of two German naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait, saying it increased security risks and sent a signal wrongadding that Chinese forces were monitoring and warning the vessels. At the weekend, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that a frigate and a supply ship had crossed the strait. According to German media, they were the first German ships to do so in more than two decades. The strait separates mainland China from Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by Beijing, which also claims sovereignty over the crucial maritime passage for global transport of goods.
