Washington. The United States Department of State approved an arms sales package for Taiwan for 2 billion dollars, a decision that caused immediate rejection from China, which described it as dangerous move that undermines peace and stability in the region.

The shipment of US weapons, which include advanced surface-to-air missile systems and radars, must still be approved by Congress.

In a statement, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry stated that the sale seriously violates China’s sovereignty and security interests, damages China-US relations, and threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

He also states that they will take all necessary measures to firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

China considers Taiwan – an island that has its own government, army and currency – part of its territory. For several years, Beijing has sent planes, drones and warships around Taiwan almost daily and this month it deployed huge military maneuvers around the island.

Although the United States does not officially recognize Taiwan on a diplomatic level, it is the island’s main partner and arms supplier.
