The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported yesterday that after agents of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) detained former Ecuadorian minister Walter Solís Valarezo in Mexico, he was released

In a statement, he added that the former Minister of Transportation and Public Works of the government of former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) has refugee status, which gives you the right to receive protection and remain as a resident in our country.

The SRE indicated that Solís Valarezo is also protected by the principle of no refund to the country of origin established by the Refugee Status Convention and to which Mexico is a party.

The arrest occurs in the context of the rupture of relations with Ecuador decreed by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador due to the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito, a determination maintained by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

Solís is being prosecuted in his country for alleged embezzlement in the Manabí Reconstruction case, for which former vice president Jorge Glas is also being prosecuted, currently held in La Roca prison in Guayaquil, after he was removed by force, on April 5, by the Ecuadorian police from the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he was taking refuge.
