Venezuela’s attorney general, Tarek Saab, said yesterday that as of last week, 533 people had been released from prison following the post-election protests in July.

Authorities said last Thursday that they had released 103 people, adding to the 225 already out of prison in November.

Human rights groups indicated that they had been able to verify the release of 48 people, compared to the 103 claimed by the government.

The non-governmental Venezuelan Prison Observatory wrote in X that a man, who was detained in a prison in the central state of Carabobo, died and had suffered severe abdominal pain.

According to the NGO, it is the third death among those detained in the protests, and the second in the last 72 hours.

The Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Information did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

After the presidential elections on July 28, the authorities reported that they arrested around 2,000 people due to street protests that arose after the results were announced that gave victory to President Nicolás Maduro.

The opposition claims, without evidence, that there was fraud.
