French left joins forces to preside over lower house

▲ The French left-wing alliance, which won the early legislative elections, agreed yesterday on a common candidate to preside over the National Assembly, while they still have not agreed on the name of a candidate for prime minister. The communist André Chassaigne (pictured), 74, was chosen as the sole candidate of the New Popular Front for the presidency of the lower house of parliament, the groups of this left-wing coalition announced on the eve of the vote. Chatelain will face the Macronist Yaël Braun-Pivet, outgoing president of the chamber, and the centrist Charles de Courson, of the independent Liot group.Afp Photo
