Thousands of public sector teachers marched this Thursday in the capital of Guatemala to demand that the government of President Bernardo Arévalo sign a new labor agreement. They walked from a commercial area in the south of the city to the historic center summoned by Joviel Acevedo, the country’s main union leader and staunch opponent of the social democratic president. We are looking for a bridge to see a light at the end of the tunnel in order to create a dialogue (…) formal and real with the government, Acevedo told the Vea Canal television station. The Ministry of Education and the Guatemalan Education Workers Union, the most important in the country and led by Acevedo, have been holding negotiations since January to unblock the labor conflict. The teachers’ union demands that the content of the negotiations be confidential, a measure rejected by the government.
