Washington. US Vice President and Democratic candidate for the White House, Kamala Harris, has led Republican Donald Trump by four percentage points in three key states, according to new polls released yesterday The New York Times and Siena College.
Polls of voting intentions, conducted from August 5 to 9, showed Harris leading Trump by an identical 50 to 46 percent margin in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The margin of sampling error among likely voters was at least 4.8 percentage points in Michigan, plus or minus 4.2 in Pennsylvania and 4.3 points in Wisconsin, the report said. In all, 1,973 likely voters were interviewed. But when asked who they would trust to do a better job on the economy, Trump leads Harris 52 percent to 46 percent in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and 51 percent to 45 percent in Michigan.
Voters preferred Trump to handle immigration, another central issue in the presidential race, while Harris leads on democracy and abortion rights.
The data, experts said, reverses polls in those states that for almost a year showed Trump tied or slightly ahead of U.S. President Democrat Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race last month and endorsed Harris instead.
In a statement, the Republican candidate’s campaign team questioned the reliability of the polls that, according to him, have the obvious intention and objective of reducing support for President Trump.
The numbers add momentum to the Democratic presidential campaign just as Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, wrap up a series of visits to states that could make the difference in the November vote to promote their economic agenda, analysts said.
