Dakar. Interpol arrested 1,060 suspects in Africa in a two-month operation aimed at combating cybercrime that has left tens of thousands of victims and caused millions in financial damages, the global police organization reported yesterday. The Operation Serengeti conducted with Afripol, the African Union’s police agency, took place from September 2 to October 31 in 19 countries on the continent and focused on ransomwarebusiness email compromise, digital extortion and online scams, the agency said in a statement. “From scams of marketing multi-level to industrial-scale credit card fraud, the growing volume and sophistication of cybercrime attacks is a cause for serious concern,” explained Valdecy Urquiza, Secretary General of Interpol. 35,000 victims were identified, with cases linked to almost $193 million in financial losses worldwide.
