After falling in the bathroom of his residence on October 19 and hitting the back of his head, Lula received stitches and periodic evaluations for several weeks.

On medical recommendation, as a result of that accident he canceled his trip to Russia, where he was to participate in the BRICS summit. He also did not attend the United Nations climate meeting COP29 in Azerbaijan.

The ruler maintained his commitments, although he worked from the official residence for several days.

For now, Lula will not need to take leave, said the Minister of Communication, Paulo Pimenta, on Gaúcha radio. Although the Brazilian Constitution establishes that the vice president must replace the head of the Executive in case of impediment to govern, it does not clarify who or how should evaluate their capacity to fulfill their functions.

The presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro; Bolivia, Luis Arce; Panama, José Raúl Mulino; Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega; Peru, Dina Boluarte, and Spain, Pedro Sánchez, among others, expressed their best wishes to the Brazilian president for a speedy recovery.

Lula has had health problems that have forced him to slow down his intense work pace. In January 2010, during his second term, he suffered a hypertension crisis attributed to stress and fatigue, and was hospitalized in Recife, which caused him to stop smoking after 50 years.

In 2011, after leaving office, he was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer and received chemotherapy and radiotherapy, managing to fully recover the following year, and last year he underwent hip surgery to relieve pain due to osteoarthritis.
