Beijing. Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC), held a new round of strategic communication with the United States here yesterday through U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, at a time when the two countries are at odds over wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, Chinese territorial claims from Taiwan to the South China Sea and trade.

The main task of the new round of strategic communication is to implement the common understandings reached by the two heads of state in San Francisco.

Wang welcomed Sullivan’s visit to Beijing, stressing that bilateral ties are crucial to both countries and have global implications.

In recent years, the China-US relationship has been full of vicissitudes, Wang said, adding that under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and his counterpart Joe Biden, the two countries have managed to return to what was agreed at the Bali summit and build on the understandings reached in San Francisco last November.

Wang noted that it is worth recapitulating experience and learning lessons, stressing that the key is to secure the general direction of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

It is the common responsibility of both China and the United States to implement the common understandings reached in San Francisco, Wang stressed, saying he hopes to maintain in-depth communication with Sullivan during this visit.

Wang said the communication is expected to be strategic and substantive, and also more constructive. The two sides should overcome disruptions and remove obstacles to promote healthy bilateral relations.

Sullivan said he was pleased to be in China for his first visit as U.S. national security adviser.

President Biden is committed to responsibly managing the relationship with China and ensuring that competition does not turn into conflict and that the two sides find ways to collaborate where common interests align.

He said he hopes to have productive dialogue with the Chinese side on a wide range of issues through this strategic communication and implement the common understandings reached by the two heads of state.
