Montevideo. The leftist Yamandú Orsi, leader of former president José Mujica, and the center-right official Álvaro Delgado will face each other in the second round to define the next president of Uruguay.

Orsi, of the Frente Amplio, obtained 43.66 percent of the votes in the elections held yesterday, while Delgado, of the National Party, obtained 26.98 percent, with 92.93 percent of the votes counted, the Electoral Court reported.

We are the party that has grown the most in these 27 days, we are going for that last effort, with more desire than everOrsi proclaimed at an event.

In turn, Delgado commented: The polls spoke, Uruguay expressed itself in democracy and freedomafter the pollsters’ projections confirmed his passage to the second round.

Since none of the candidates exceeded 50 percent of the votes, there will be a second round on November 24.

Orsi, a 57-year-old history teacher, and Delgado, a 55-year-old veterinarian, surpassed nine other candidates who aspired to succeed Luis Lacalle Pou, who has 50 percent approval, but the Constitution prevents him from another consecutive term.

Orsi is betting on returning to the left to the presidential seat that he lost in 2020 after governing for three consecutive periods, one of them with Mujica (2010-2015).

The 89-year-old former guerrilla, who is recovering from problems derived from esophageal cancer, but who was very present in the campaign, voted as soon as the circuits opened. Maybe it’s my last votehe said, in a wheelchair and surrounded by television cameras.
