At a ceremony to mark the 85th anniversary of Nazi German forces invading and bombing Poland at the start of World War II, officials yesterday stressed the need to strengthen its defences in the face of the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine. Sirens sounded and a ceremonial bell rang in Wielun, the first civilian town hit by German bombs in the early hours of 1 September 1939. About 1,200 people were killed in the fighting that began at around 4:40 a.m. Polish President Andrzej Duda (pictured, accompanied by survivors) said: We can say that we have forgiven, although the pain is persistent and there are still thousands of people affected.and also called on Berlin to compensate for the damage.
