Russia advances in eastern Ukraine; captures Novohrodivka

kyiv. Russia said yesterday that its forces were advancing in eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian troops reported deadly bombings and urged its Western allies to authorize further attacks on Russian territory, officials from both sides reported.

The enemy shelled the city of Sumy last night. Two people were killed and four were injured, including two children.the region’s military administration reported yesterday on Telegram.

The mayor of the city, Oleksiy Drozdenko, said that several houses and vehicles were damaged and others were destroyed by the attack.

Two other women were killed in a Russian rocket attack on a village near the front line in the Donetsk region, the epicentre of the fighting, the regional prosecutor’s office said.

The Russian army claimed the capture of Novohrodivka in the same region yesterday, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed in a statement. The town, with 14,000 inhabitants before the start of the Russian offensive in February 2022, is located about 20 kilometres from Pokrovsk, an important logistics centre for the Kiev army.

Ukraine announced that three people injured in a Russian airstrike in the city of Poltava last week have died, raising the death toll to 58, Governor Philip Pronin said on his Telegram account.

Russia said the offensive on Poltava, one of the deadliest in recent months, was aimed at a training center of the Ukrainian army and that the attack had destroyed their goals; Ukrainian authorities did not specify who the victims were, but more than 300 people were injured.

The head of the German government, Olaf Scholz, yesterday advocated intensifying diplomatic efforts to reach more quickly peace in Ukraine, which has been in conflict with Russia since February 2022. There will certainly be another peace conference, and the President and I agree that it should include Russia.he said in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF.

World leaders and senior officials from more than 90 countries met in Switzerland in June for the first-ever peace summit on Ukraine, to which Russia was not invited.

Romania and Latvia, members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, yesterday denounced that Russian drones violated their airspace and a Russian aircraft crashed in Latvian territory, said President Edgars Rinkevics.

Early yesterday, when Moscow attacked Civilian targets and port infrastructure Along the Danube in Ukraine, an unmanned aerial vehicle violated Romanian airspace, the national defense ministry reported.
