Manaus. Smoke from forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon was causing people in the region to suffer from sore throats, coughs and red eyes yesterday. Large sections of the country have been covered in thick smoke in recent days by fires in various parts of the Cerrado savannah, the Pantanal wetlands and Sao Paulo state. Residents are paying the price, as is the case for Fatima Silva, a 60-year-old farmer from the town of Labrea. I don’t feel well. I have trouble breathing, I need eye drops, I can’t go outside, I can’t go anywhere because everything is white from the smoke.he lamented.
