The United States again classified Cuba, Iran and North Korea as countries sponsors of terrorism in its 2023 National Report, published yesterday by the State Department.
Inclusion on the list is the justification for applying strict sanctions to those nations. On January 12, 2021, the State Department imposed this category on Cuba and determined that the island repeatedly supported international criminal acts by granting refuge to attackers.
Under peace negotiation protocols, Cuba rejected Colombia’s request to extradite 10 leaders of the National Liberation Army (ELN) living in Havanahe noted, adding: “In November 2022, in compliance with a request from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, the United States Attorney General announced that arrest warrants against 17 ELN commanders would be suspended, including those whose extradition Colombia requested.
In May 2023, the Colombian government and the ELN convened the third round of peace talks between Colombia and the ELN in Cuba. The island continues to host several fugitives from US justice wanted on charges related to political violence, many of whom have resided in Cuba for decades.says the White House report.
Meanwhile, he accused Iran of supporting Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis in Yemen, as well as militiamen aligned with Iran in Iraq and Syria.
On November 20, 2017, he called North Korea State sponsor of terrorismand accused her of being involved in murders on foreign soil.
He also kept Syria in that category, which until last week was governed by Bashar al Assad, overthrown by a coalition of Islamist groups financed by Turkey, a president to whom he attributed a strong relationship with Hezbollah and Iran.
