President Xiomara Castro announced on August 28 her decision to cancel the bilateral pact, claiming that it could serve to prepare a coup d’état in Honduras.

During the treaty’s validity, fifty drug traffickers were handed over by Honduras to the United States, including the former president, Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022), who last June was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
