The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, is considering the possibility of carrying out pre-emptive air strikes against Iran with the aim of preventing that nation from developing nuclear weapons, reported yesterday The Wall Street Journal citing his own sources.
The option of a military attack against nuclear facilities is being evaluated more seriously by some members of the magnate’s transition team considering “the potential impact of the fall of President Bashar al Assad, an ally of Tehran, in Syria, the future of the troops Americans in the region and the possibility of Israel decimating the Hezbollah and Hamas movements.
The Republican’s team is evaluating two main strategies. The first seeks to intensify military pressure to the region by sending more US troops, fighter jets and ships, in addition to providing advanced weaponry to Tel Aviv, including bombs designed to destroy bunkers.
The second option proposes using the threat of the use of military force, combined with sanctions imposed by the United States, as a tool to pressure Iran towards a diplomatic solution. The American newspaper notes that Trump has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent calls that he is concerned that Tehran will carry out a nuclear attack during his term, two people familiar with the conversations reported.
The day before, Trump declared to the magazine time which does not rule out the possibility of a war with Iran, on which several sanctions weigh.
