Caracas. Deputies of the National Assembly of Venezuela approved yesterday by qualified majority an agreement in rejection of the rude intrusion of the European Parliament in the country’s internal affairs, after it recognized the former right-wing opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, as legitimate president from Venezuela.

Please note that honourable Members of Parliament who are in favour of approving the agreement to repudiate the gross interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs by some fascist MEPs of the European Parliament, please indicate this with the customary sign… Approved by qualified majority!said Jorge Rodríguez, president of the legislative body in the message on the Venezuelan Television broadcast.

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a motion recognising González Urrutia, thanks to votes from right-wing and far-right groups, and urging the EU institutions to do everything possible to ensure that he takes office in January.

The European bloc also asked the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged crimes committed in the country following the presidential elections on July 28, for which it holds the current government of Nicolás Maduro responsible.

The vote in favour of the motion in the European Legislature was passed by a majority, with 309 votes from the European People’s Party (the group with the largest number of votes in the Chamber), from the radical right bench – led by the president of Italy, the ultra-conservative Giorgia Meloni – and from the extreme right of Germany and Spain, including the Vox party, but also five MEPs from the socialist group joined in, specifically those from Portugal, reported Armando G. Tejeda, correspondent in Madrid for The Day.

Rodríguez criticized the position of the MEPs, whom he described as fascists.

They are ultra-rightists, those who do not deserve to be called deputies because they do not even listen to the true clamor of their people and want to come and get involved in matters that only concern Venezuela.the official added.

Meanwhile, González Urrutia yesterday thanked the European recognition and considered that the decision validates the sovereign will of citizens. He denied having been coerced by the Spanish government or the Spanish ambassador in the Latin American country, Ramón Santos Martínez, in the context of his departure, a day after he assured that the Venezuelan authorities did so to make him recognize Maduro’s victory in a letter and be able to leave Venezuela in order to request political asylum in Spain.

From Caracas, Maduro said that González Urrutia asked for mercy to leave the country for Spain.
