A thrill ride at Western Playland had a mechanical failure when a cable snapped with two people on board, leading to an emergency response, according to park officials.
The problem happened on the Southwest Slinger, a slingshot-style ride that uses high-tension cables to launch riders into the air. The cable broke while two people were riding.
Park staff quickly followed emergency procedures, cleared the area, and called first responders. The riders were checked for minor injuries.
The two riders, a man and a woman in their late teens, had minor injuries. A video online seemed to show the man comforting the woman after it happened.
Western Playland said in a statement that an initial review showed the ride was working within normal limits and followed the manufacturer’s guidelines when the problem happened. The park also said all safety inspections for the Southwest Slinger and other rides were up to date.
The ride is now closed and will stay shut while park officials and the manufacturer investigate what caused the problem.
Park officials said keeping visitors and employees safe is their top priority.
Authorities have not shared more details about the riders’ conditions or what caused the mechanical failure.
