Four people died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 on Sunday, authorities confirmed. New Mexico State Police said a commercial truck reportedly crossed the median, struck a car and another truck, and then caught fire.
NMSP identified the three victims found in a passenger car as 68-year-old Wayne Viveiros, 51-year-old Luana Viveiros, 22-year-old Lilinoe Viveiros. They were all from Hawaii. The Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced them dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, authorities said the driver of the truck that allegedly crossed the median also died at the scene. NMSP said they are still waiting to notify the driver’s next of kin.
Police officers responded to the crash around 4:30 p.m. near mile marker 39 on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Gallup.
According to authorities, the commercial truck was heading west when it crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes, causing the crash.
Police said the truck hit the gray passenger car and another commercial truck before catching fire.
Meanwhile, NMSP said the driver of the second commercial vehicle suffered injuries and went to a hospital for treatment. Police expect the driver to survive.
