Although results remain unofficial, news outlets have projected Deb Haaland as the winner of New Mexico’s governor’s race. As she prepares to take office, the governor-elect met with supporters in Barelas on Wednesday before sharing to reporters her priorities for the state, according to KOB 4.
Haaland said she plans to focus on affordability, education, and public safety, KOB 4 reports.
Some of her day one priorities include a moratorium on data centers and appointing key officials, including a new secretary for the Children, Youth and Families Department. However, Haaland told reporters she had yet to identify potential candidates for the positions or put together a shortlist, the tv station wrote in its website.
The governor-elect also announced that her transition website is now up and running, KOB 4 stated.
Haaland will become the first Native American woman to serve as governor in the United States after defeating Gregg Hull. According to KOB 4, unofficial results show her winning 57% of the vote.
What's Next
KOB 4 reported that Haaland will need the Democratic-controlled state Legislature’s support to put her priorities into action. So far, both sides appear to be on the same page, the tv station added.
