Authorities confirmed the death of a utility worker near Clovis after he was electrocuted Friday. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office said he was trying to repair a utility pole that had shifted out of place during heavy rains.
Curry County sheriff’s deputies identified the victim as Ian Massey, a lineman from Clovis, New Mexico.
Deputies and Clovis Fire Department crews responded around 10:30 a.m. to a rural area just outside the city. They were called to the scene after reports of an industrial accident.
Authorities said when crews arrived, Clovis Fire Department personnel rescued the employee from several feet of standing water. They then provided first aid.
Officials said responders took Massey to Plains Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Deputies said the utility pole unexpectedly fell into the standing water where the lineman was working. Massey came into contact with electricity, they added.
Fundraiser Launched for Massey’s Family
The Clovis community established a GoFundMe to support Massey’s family. He is survived by his wife, Emily, and young daughter, Cora.
Organizers said the fundraiser aims to help ease Emily’s financial burden as she cares for Cora. Donations will cover funeral and memorial costs, household bills, daily needs, and other unexpected expenses.
Both of New Mexico’s U.S. senators shared their condolences after the tragedy. They also recognized the crews who risked their safety to protect the community.
“My prayers are with the Clovis community and the family and loved ones of the lineman, Ian Massey, who tragically lost his life. I’m grateful for the linemen, first responders, and emergency crews who put their own safety on the line to protect and serve our communities,” Senator Ben Ray Lujan said.
“My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Ian Massey, a Clovis lineman who lost his life while working to restore power for his community. Linemen are essential workers who often put themselves in harm’s way to keep our country running,” according to Senator Martin Heinrich.
