New Mexico taxpayers and businesses affected by September flooding have more time to file and pay their taxes, with the state extending several deadlines into January 2027 and waiving penalties and interest, Organ Mountain News reports.
The relief is the first use of authority under House Bill 291, passed in the 2026 session, which lets the Taxation and Revenue Department waive interest when it grants extensions for good cause, including natural disasters. Previously, penalties could be suspended during an extension, but interest was still due. “This extension allows those taxpayers a grace period so they can focus on recovering,” Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said.
The Oct. 15 personal income tax deadline and estimated payments due that day are now due Jan. 15, 2027. Deadlines of Oct. 26, Nov. 25 and Dec. 28 for gross receipts, compensating, withholding, oil and gas, combined fuel and other excise taxes move to Jan. 25, 2027.
To get the relief, taxpayers must submit Form TRD-41432, Disaster Relief Extension Notification, by email to [email protected] or by mail to P.O. Box 630, Santa Fe, NM 87504-0630. Those who need more time can also file Form RPD-41096, Extension of Time to File. Both are on the department’s Forms and Publications page under “Extensions.”
