Naaba Ani Elementary School in Bloomfield won back-to-back victories in the statewide Prodigy Math competition, topping more than 100 schools in both March and April 2025, KOB 4 reports. The Tri-City Record also reported the wins.
The Prodigy State Challenge is a monthly contest in which students answer math questions on a game-based platform. In March, Naaba Ani students correctly answered more than 33,000 questions, earning the state title and a $500 award, and the top five classes, made up of fourth and sixth graders, celebrated with a pizza party, the Tri-City Record reported. In the game, students create avatars, earn pets and battle by solving math problems.
Fourth-grade teacher Mindy Sanchez encouraged fellow teachers to bring Prodigy into their classrooms, which increased student participation. "The more they were playing, the more kids were playing, and then we were able to top the other schools," she told KOB 4. Sanchez said she has seen a lot of growth in her students’ math skills, and another fourth-grade teacher, Shauna Lewis, told the Tri-City Record her students made strong progress in multiplication and division.
Students are enthusiastic too. Fourth-grader Jose Gasaleoarri described Prodigy as a fun game of battling his friends, and classmate Jadynce Grey said more students are reaching higher scores since they started using the program.
