A furry friend named Atlas went on a hike but got too tired to continue. Luckily, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office came to his rescue.
BCSO’s Open Space deputies headed up the mountain to bring the 120–130-pound pup home. Authorities said Atlas became “too exhausted to finish a difficult hike.”
The rough trail made the rescue challenging, so deputies took turns carrying Atlas before securing him in a Stokes basket for the trip down. The four-mile rescue took nearly five hours.
Atlas made it down safely, authorities confirmed. A sergeant even gave him the title “the goodest boy we have ever rescued.”
If you’re a hiker, deputies are reminding you to bring plenty of water for your pets and watch for signs of exhaustion. They also urge you to remember that the trip back can be just as challenging as the climb up.
“Great work by everyone who helped get this very big boy home safely!” BSCO said in a social media post.
