APS Urges Public to Complete Survey Ahead of Welcome Back to School Community Listening Session

Every student and parent voice matters. School surveys help administrators understand community needs, refine programs, and make informed decisions that enhance learning. By listening to feedback, schools continuously improve services and create a better educational experience for all.

Albuquerque Public Schools reminded the public to complete its survey by July 10 before the upcoming community listening session. APS earlier launched a survey to help shape the Board of Education’s Welcome Back to School Community Listening Session. The gathering will focus on food and nutrition services, as well as transportation.

“Your feedback will help determine the topics discussed during the event,” APS said in a recent social media post.

Public feedback will help APS identify students’ and families’ priorities as it plans for the upcoming school year. The district said survey results will determine the focus of discussions during the listening session on July 27.

The board will hold its second community listening session of the year. It will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alice and Bruce King Educational Complex. It will also be livestreamed and available for later viewing on the Board of Education’s YouTube channel.

The listening session will also feature a showcase of the district’s electric school buses and a sneak peek of new cafeteria menu items. Attendees can explore the new initiatives from Food and Nutrition Services and the Transportation Department.

APS Menu Sneak Peek

Before the meeting, attendees can sample new menu items planned for the upcoming school year. The Food and Nutrition Services Department developed the offerings using student feedback collected last semester under the leadership of Marie Johnson.

The Food and Nutrition Services team recently attended a state conference to gain valuable training before the new school year. The training strengthens the team’s efforts to provide healthy meals for students. Johnson said the conference affirmed the district’s vision for the future of school meals.

In an earlier report, APS announced plans to make a major shift in school meal preparation. Starting August 7, district staff will prepare more than half of the menu items from scratch. To support the transition, the Food and Nutrition Services team will have to undergo a series of trainings to ensure proper plan implementation.

Johnson said there will be lots of training over the summer so the team is fully equipped by August. “All of our menus will be 51% scratch or more.”
