Authorities said the human remains found in a remote desert outside Tucson were not connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie as the high-profile search for Today host Savannah Guthrie’s mother continues.
The remains were found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard on Sunday, August 17. Investigators immediately ruled out any connection to the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother.
In a post on X, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said there was “no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”
Authorities theorized the remains seemed to have been at the site for a longer period of time. They believed the remains may have been in the location even before the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.
On Monday, the spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department, Angelica Carillo, said there is no additional information on the case.
The discovery happens as the investigation into Guthrie’s case enters its seventh month.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 at her home in the neighborhood of Catalina Foothills north of Tucson. Her disappearance has remained a mystery. Previously, the disappearance was considered by authorities investigating the case to be a kidnapping.
A ransom note was released by the Sheriff’s Department in July, believed to be connected to the abduction. The note claimed that Guthrie had died.
Guthrie’s whereabouts are still unknown. No one has been held responsible for her disappearance.
Upon its discovery, the unidentified human remains in the Arizona desert could naturally raise fears that investigators had found a grim answer to Nancy Guthrie’s case.
Authorities are investigating the remains separately while the search for the missing mother continues.
