Strong to Severe Storms Threaten Damaging Winds, Hail, Heavy Rain, and Flash Flooding in Northern New Mexico

A weather forecast warns that strong to severe storms may trigger damaging winds, hail, heavy rain, and flash flooding to northern and eastern New Mexico, with the greatest risk near Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, Las Vegas, and Raton.

Residents in the northern and eastern parts of New Mexico are urged to take precautions against strong to severe storms. These storms could bring damaging winds, hail, heavy rain, and flash flooding.

Storms may take longer to develop, but activity is expected to increase as temperatures climb into the 90s, according to KOB 4. The highest risk of strong or severe storms is forecast near Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, Las Vegas, and Raton.

The weather report published at 4:54 PM said a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts, hail, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Storm coverage is expected to be lower than earlier storm activity. However, localized flash flooding remains possible, especially in areas with saturated ground or recent flooding.

Most storms are forecast to weaken during the evening and gradually end overnight. Thursday’s weather will remain much the same. Scattered afternoon thunderstorms will form over the high terrain before moving into lower elevations.

Storms will be most widespread on Thursday across Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, Raton, Las Vegas, the central mountains, and northeast New Mexico. A few storms could become strong or severe, especially near Raton and Clayton.

Temperatures are expected to climb another degree or two on Thursday. Some communities in eastern New Mexico could approach heat advisory criteria.
