Students will head back to school soon.With that in mind, the Department of Transportation urges motorists and pedestrians to exercise extra caution to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and parents. Safe roads are essential to protecting everyone as they travel to and from school.
“We just want everyone to be safe on the roads,” DOT said in a social media post, highlighting road safety tips to the public.
The department reminds motorists and pedestrians to prioritize safety in and around school zones.
“Whether traveling by vehicle or on foot, everyone plays a role in protecting children,” it added.
DOT encourages the public to “stay alert, obey traffic laws and remain aware of your surroundings.”
When driving, don’t forget to:
• Slow down.
• Stop for school buses.
• Obey crossing guards.
• Watch for children.
• Yield at crosswalks.
• Keep crosswalks clear.
Pedestrians must:
• Check for oncoming traffic in both directions before crossing the street, even at crosswalks.
• Use marked crosswalks whenever possible, but never assume drivers will stop.
• Walk on sidewalks or designated walkways whenever possible.
• Avoid walking on the roadway, and never step into traffic or travel lanes unexpectedly.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing to stay visible when walking in low-light conditions.
APS Invites Families to Back-to-School Listening Session
Meanwhile, Albuquerque Public Schools invites parents and community members to share their voices ahead of the new school year. The district will hold its second community listening session on Monday, July 27.
APS said the “Welcome Back to School” event will give families an opportunity to connect directly with district leaders. The gathering will also offer a firsthand look at the future of student services.
The session will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alice and Bruce King Educational Complex, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE. APS designed the collaborative forum to focus on two pillars of the student experience: Food and Nutrition Services and Transportation.
The Board of Education will livestream the session on its official YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in person. It will also post a recording for later viewing.
APS urges all community members to participate in the conversation, whether they attend in person or from home. The district will use the feedback as it prepares to welcome students back for another year of learning.
