The Edgewood treasurer revealed Tuesday that the city received notice of a past due balance of over a quarter-million dollars owed to the Internal Revenue Service.
The IRS’ statement said the town has been past due on $279,000 since January, the town treasurer said at the July 28 town commission meeting.
The notice comes amid scathing financial reports that have prompted a growing community effort to dissolve the town of Edgewood. The town’s Fire and EMS agreement with Santa Fe County spurred concerns about the town’s financial state earlier this year, with a resolution in June allowing the town to continue receiving fire relief from the county.
“I am going to reach out to the IRS and see if we can negotiate the penalty,” the treasurer said. “We do not have a budget for this amount.”
