Authorities arrested a 64-year-old man after he allegedly shot and killed his son Sunday night at their residence in northwest Albuquerque.
Police identified the suspect as Mark Leib and the victim as his 34-year-old child, Matthew Leib. A confrontation reportedly occurred on the 6200 block of Sabre Ct. NW, near 4th Street and Solar Road, at around 10:30 p.m.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, Matthew was at the house with his girlfriend and another friend when his father returned from work. Police said the older Leib was threatening to kill someone.
Matthew’s girlfriend tried to hold Mark back, authorities said. She, however, told the police that he allegedly grabbed a gun, punched her, and threatened to kill her.
She and the victim’s friend left the residence in separate vehicles. Police said that when they both returned to search for Matthew, his father came out of the house. He allegedly admitted to killing his son, according to authorities.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and APD officers responded after a neighbor called 911. Police said they found Matthew dead at the scene.
Mark faces a murder charge, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and a count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
The APD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the deadly shooting.
