New Mexico Athletes Earn Opportunities With NFL Teams After College Careers

Several New Mexico football players have earned opportunities with NFL organizations after completing their college careers. The athletes will compete in rookie minicamps and offseason programs as they pursue roster spots for the upcoming NFL season.

New Mexico football players are taking the next step in their careers after several athletes earned opportunities with National Football League (NFL) teams. These signings and rookie invitations give former collegiate standouts a chance to compete for roster spots. Moreover, they allow athletes to continue their football careers at the professional level.

Team officials announced that multiple New Mexico athletes have signed as undrafted free agents or accepted invitations to participate in NFL rookie minicamps following the NFL Draft. As a result, these opportunities allow players to showcase their skills. Teams will evaluate talent ahead of training camp and the regular season.

Coaches and analysts indicated that competing to be on an NFL roster is highly competitive – especially for undrafted players. As a rookie, participating in the rookie mini-camp and the offseason work-out programs gives a player the chance to show:
1) The ability to compete athletically
2) Football knowledge at the collegiate and or pro levels
3) How would they adapt to playing at the pro level when competing with other players across the country?

While merely signing with an NFL club does not guarantee a spot on the active roster during the regular season, many players have become professionally successful as undrafted free agents (players who were signed after entering the NFL but were not drafted). Coaches evaluate prospects at various NFL teams throughout the offseason practice schedule. Then, they make the final decisions on roster spots during the final weekend of June’s OTA/end of June mini-camps.

University officials and supporters welcomed the news, noting that the athletes’ achievements bring additional recognition to New Mexico’s football programs. They said these opportunities also motivate current student-athletes who aspire to compete at the highest level of professional football.

The NFL opportunities come as teams across the league continue building their preseason rosters ahead of training camp. As the evaluation process continues, New Mexico’s newest professional football hopefuls will work to earn permanent roster spots. They aim to begin their NFL careers.
