As the family grieves the loss of their one-year-old son barely a week ago, many people showed their support through an initiative The Tijeras community is working hand in hand to raise funds following the child’s tragic death.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said deputies went to the New Mexico Early Learning Academy on Wednesday afternoon. They responded to a call about an unconscious baby who was not breathing. The baby was later declared dead.
The daycare remained empty Thursday after closing for the week.
To support the child’s loved ones, community members hosted a benefit lowrider event Sunday in Albuquerque and launched a GoFundMe campaign. Organizers said the fundraisers can help ease the financial burden as the family takes time to grieve and may face challenges with job security.
Earlier, family friend Deborah Lovato said the boy’s parents are still in shock as they cope with his death.
“The mother and father have not returned to work naturally, so it’s hitting the household. You know, not just physically, mentally, financially-it’s all of the above. Their emotions are with a roller coaster,” Lovato told KOB 4.
Lovato said the family is still waiting to learn what led to their son’s death. She said an autopsy could help shed light on what happened.
She said the family wants to know what happened at the day care before the boy died.
