The farm in New Mexico that Golden Globe-winning actress Marsha Mason once owned covers 228 acres. It is now being put up for sale again at a price of $13.5 million after the actress sold it for $6.2 million nearly ten years ago.
A 228-acre New Mexico estate once owned by actress Marsha Mason is back on the market for $13.5 million, down from a $16 million listing two years ago that failed to attract a buyer. Mason sold the Abiquiu Valley property, located along the Rio Chama near Santa Fe, for $6.2 million in 2014 after developing it into an agricultural operation.
Mason, known for Golden Globe wins and roles in Frasier and Grace and Frankie, built the estate into New Mexico’s only Demeter-certified biodynamic organic farm, producing medicinal herbs and skincare products. The property features a 7,300-square-foot adobe main house, a guesthouse, equestrian facilities, an events building, and river frontage with mountain views.
The farm that she runs in the Abiquiu Valley is located along the Rio Chama, about 53 miles north of Santa Fe. There she combines biodynamic agriculture with luxury residences, equestrian facilities and magnificent mountain views.
Two years ago the property was listed at $16 million but no buyer was found. Cody Lujan and Chad Dugger from Hall and Hall, together with Matt Desmond and Ayden Gramm from Corcoran Plaza Properties, are the ones handling the current listing.
After Hollywood, Mason turns medicinal herbs
Mason gained recognition by winning Golden Globe awards for Cinderella Liberty and The Goodbye Girl in the 1970s and 1980s. She was later seen on television as Sherry Dempsey, the girlfriend of Martin Crane on Frasier. She also appeared in The Middle and Grace and Frankie.
In the 1990s, she divorced Neil Simon, the playwright. Then Mason left Hollywood and put in around $1 million for undeveloped land in rural New Mexico.
She converted the land into an agricultural estate and started up a business, Resting in the River. The business produced certified-organic medicinal herbs as well as holistic wellness and skin-care products.
But in 2014, Mason sold the estate at a price of $6.2 million and then moved to the New York area in order to concentrate on her theater career.
A working farm with luxury amenities
About 70 acres with irrigation are used for growing medicinal herbs, alfalfa, and other forage crops. The property is referred to in its listing as New Mexico’s only Demeter-certified biodynamic organic farm.
Its main feature is a house of 7,300 square feet in the Spanish adobe style, designed by the architect Theodore Waddell. The house has a courtyard with a fountain, a large room with two fireplaces, a library lined with books, and a kitchen next to a dining area that leads into a screened porch. The master bedroom comes with two tiled bathrooms.
There is also a separate guesthouse made of adobe measuring 4,700 square feet. It has three bedrooms, five bathrooms as well as an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area. The gardens contain two detached casitas, each with its own bathroom.
The estate also includes a special-events building of 5,400 square feet with a kitchen and two apartments, a barn with ten stables, and an outdoor dressage arena.
Riverfront setting and mountain views
The property runs alongside the Rio Chama. It has a riverfront bosque, a fly-fishing pond, and views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It is a luxury Southwestern retreat, while preserving the agricultural project that Mason started after he left Hollywood.
Now at a reduced price, the property provides buyers with a unique house in New Mexico whose history connects the entertainment industry with organic farming.
